Internet and telecommunications in Panama

During the last few years Panama has experienced a lot of telecommunication changes in a very positive way.  As a result, a lot of telecommunications companies are installing network operation centers in Panama taking advantage of the location and the submarine optical fiber making possible an interconnection between North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia and the rest of the world.

This underground network gives Panama four broad band and fiber optics international connections and is replacing the satellite system.   The new cables integrate the New Wavelength Division Multiplexing that will allow ultra elevated broad band applications like multimedia and video.  This new technology provides fast and reliable connections for B2B, E-commerce and excellent high speed connections for regular users.

The MAYA-1 ring has repeating stations in Florida, Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, The Cayman Islands and its own communications structure. It also provides the Pan American Cable with a restoration route. The Backbone ARCOS-1 covers Florida, Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Aruba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and the Bahamas.

The Global Crossing project connects Asia, United States, goes across the Panama Canal, Caribbean countries and all the way to Europe. The Maya and Arcos systems connect the Americas to the Caribbean.

The project required an investment of $217 million US Dollar and represents a great effort to make Panama the Telecommunications Center for Latin America.
